Mami Umeki ( Japanese 梅 木 真 美 Umeki Mami ; * December 6, 1994 in Ōita ) is a Japanese judoka . She was world champion in 2015 and runner-up in 2017.

Athletic career

Mami Umeki fights in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 78 kilograms. In 2011 she won the Junior World Championships in Cape Town, in 2012 she was U20 Asian champion. At the Universiade 2013 in Kazan she won a bronze medal after losing to the Hungarian Abigél Joó in the semifinals . In 2014 at the Asian Games in Incheon, she lost to North Korean Sol Kyong in the quarter-finals , but fought her way to a bronze medal in the hope round . In 2015 Umeki won the final of the Asian Championships in Kuwait against Sol Kyong. At the 2015 World Championships in Astana, she defeated Luise Malzahn from Germany in the quarter-finals , Daria Pogorzelec from Poland in the semifinals and Anamari Velenšek from Slovenia in the final . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Umeki was eliminated in her first fight against Abigél Joó.

In 2017 Umeki won the Japanese championships and the Grand Slam tournament in Yekaterinburg . At the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, she defeated the Cuban Kaliema Antomarchi in the quarter-finals and Marhinde Verkerk from the Netherlands in the semi-finals . In the final she lost to the Brazilian Mayra Aguiar . In 2018 she finished second behind her compatriot Ruika Sato at the Grand Slam in Osaka , and in 2019 she won the final in Osaka against her compatriot Shori Hamada .
