Mayra Aguiar
Mayra Aguiar da Silva (born August 3, 1991 in Porto Alegre ) is a Brazilian judoka . She was Olympic third in 2012 and 2016 and world champion in 2014 and 2017.
Athletic career
Mayra Aguiar was the Brazilian middleweight champion in 2006, the weight class up to 70 kilograms. In the same year she won bronze at the U20 World Championships. In May 2007 she reached the final at the Pan American Championships and lost to the Colombian Yuri Alvear . Two months later at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, she lost in the final of the US judoka Ronda Rousey . In 2008 Aguiar won the Pan American Championships. At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, she lost her first fight against the Spaniard Leire Iglesias . In October 2008 she finished second at the U20 World Championships.
In 2009, the 1.77 m tall Mayra Aguiar rose to light heavyweight (up to 78 kilograms). At the U20 World Championships, she won a bronze medal. In 2010 she won the Pan American Championships. At the Judo World Championships 2010 in Tokyo she won the semifinals against the German Heide Wollert , in the final she lost against the US judoka Kayla Harrison . A month and a half later, she won the U20 World Championships in Agadir. In 2011 she won the silver medal at the Pan American Championships behind Kayla Harrison. At the Judo World Championships 2011 in Paris, she lost to the Japanese Akari Ogata in the semifinals , in the battle for bronze Aguiar won against Heide Wollert. Two months later she lost in the quarterfinals of the Pan American Games in Guadalajara to Kayla Harrison, but fought her way to the bronze medal.
In 2012 Aguiar won the Pan American Championships against the Cuban Yalennis Castillo . At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, she lost to Kayla Harrison in the semi-finals, after beating Marhinde Verkerk from the Netherlands, the Brazilian received the bronze medal. In 2013 she won the final of the Pan American Championships against the Canadian Cathérine Roberge . At the Judo World Championships in Rio de Janeiro in 2013 , she lost in the quarterfinals to Marhinde Verkerk, in the battle for bronze she won against Cathérine Roberge. The following year, she won the 2014 Judo World Championships in Chelyabinsk in the semifinals against Kayla Harrison. In the final she defeated the Frenchwoman Audrey Tcheuméo .
In 2015 she won the Pan American Championships by beating Kayla Harrison in the final. At the Pan American Games 2015 in Toronto, the two judokas met again in the final, this time Harrison won. The US fighter also defeated Aguiar in the final of the Pan American Championships in 2016. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Aguiar was defeated in the semifinals by French Audrey Tcheuméo, while the Brazilian won the bronze medal against Cuban Yalennis Castillo. A year later, she won the quarterfinals of the Judo World Championships 2017 in Budapest against Audrey Tcheuméo. In the semifinals she defeated the Japanese Ruika Sato and in the finals her compatriot Mami Umeki .
In April 2019 she won the Pan American Championships in Lima. In August she also won the Pan American Games , which were also played in Lima. A fortnight later, she defeated Kosovar Loriana Kuka in the quarter-finals of the 2019 World Championships in Tokyo . After her semi-final defeat by French Madeleine Malonga , Aguiar won the battle for a bronze medal against Portuguese Patricia Sampaio .
