Akari Ogata

Akari Ogata ( Japanese 緒 方 亜 香 里 , Ogata Akari ; born September 24, 1990 in Uki ) is a former Japanese judoka who was third in the 2010 World Championship and second in the 2011 World Championship.

Athletic career

The 1.71 m tall Akari Ogata fought in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 78 kilograms. In 2009 she was Junior World Champion, defeating Kayla Harrison from the United States in the final . A month and a half later, she won the Grand Slam tournament in Tokyo . In early 2010 she also won the Grand Slam tournament in Paris . At the Grand Slam in Rio de Janeiro she lost in the final against her compatriot Ruika Sato . At the World Championships in Tokyo she was defeated in the quarterfinals by the Ukrainian Maryna Pryshchepa . With victories over the French Celine Lebrun and the German Heide Wollert , Ogata secured a bronze medal. In November 2010 Ogata reached the final at the Asian Games, where she was defeated by the South Korean Jeong Gyeong-mi .

In 2011 Ogata won the Grand Slam in Moscow . At the World Championships in Paris she defeated the Dutch Marhinde Verkerk in the quarter-finals and the Brazilian Mayra Aguiar in the semi-finals , and in the final she was defeated by the French Audrey Tcheuméo . At the end of the year, Ogata won the Tokyo Grand Slam for the second time. In 2012 she took third place in the Paris Grand Slam. In April she won the Japanese championships for the first time. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London she won her first fight against Jeong Gyeong-mi, but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Marhinde Verkerk. After second places at the Grand Slam tournaments in Tokyo in 2012 and in Paris in 2013, she was eliminated from the 2013 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro in the first round against Marhinde Verkerk. Ogata was still active internationally until 2017, but no longer took part in major championships.
