Abigél Joó

Abigél Joó (born August 6, 1990 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian judoka . She was European champion in 2010 and 2012.

Career

Abigél Joó was third in the 2006 European Cadet Championships in the weight class up to 63 kilograms. In 2007 she won bronze in the same weight class at the U20 and U23 European Championships. In 2008 she was U20 European champion in the weight class up to 70 kilograms and third in the U20 world championships. In 2009 she won the U20 and U23 European Championships and was third in the U20 World Championships.

The 1.83 m tall Abigél Joó was the Hungarian middleweight champion in 2008 and 2009. In 2010 she moved up to the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 78 kilograms. Here she was Hungarian champion in 2010, 2011 and from 2013 to 2017. At the European Championships 2010 in Vienna she defeated the French Lucie Louette in the semifinals and Marhinde Verkerk from the Netherlands in the final . At the end of 2010 she won the U23 European Championships for the second time. In 2011, after losing to Lucie Louette and the Slovenian Anamari Velenšek, she finished fifth at the European Championships in Istanbul. Four months later, she finished seventh at the 2011 World Championships . At the end of the year she won the U23 European Championships for the third time. At the 2012 European Championships in Chelyabinsk, she won the semi-finals over German Luise Malzahn , and in the final she defeated French Audrey Tcheuméo . Three months later at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, she lost in the quarterfinals to Kayla Harrison from the United States. After a victory in the hope round over the Pole Daria Pogorzelec, she was defeated in the battle for bronze Audrey Tcheuméo and finished fifth. At the end of 2012 she won the U23 European Championships for the fourth time.

The 2013 European Championships took place in Budapest. In the semifinals Joó lost to Lucie Louette, in the battle for bronze she defeated Luise Malzahn. In the final of the Universiade 2013 in Kazan, Joó defeated the French Madeleine Malonga . At the 2014 European Championships in Montpellier, she lost to Marhinde Verkerk in the semi-finals, and in the battle for bronze she defeated the second Dutch woman, Guusje Steenhuis . In the next two years, she finished seventh at the European Championships in 2015 and 2016 . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, like four years earlier, she was defeated in the quarter-finals by the eventual Olympic champion Kayla Harrison. In Rio de Janeiro, Joó finished seventh after losing to Cuban Yalennis Castillo in the hope round. At the 2017 European Championships in Warsaw, Joó lost to Audrey Tcheuméo in the semi-finals, but won a bronze medal by defeating the Slovenian Klara Apotekar . At the end of her international career, Abigél Joó started at the 2017 World Championships in her hometown of Budapest. But she was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Cuban Kaliema Antomarchi .
