Guusje Steenhuis

Guusje Steenhuis (born October 27, 1992 ) is a Dutch judoka . She was runner-up in 2018 in the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 78 kilograms.

Athletic career

Guusje Steenhuis already took part in international youth tournaments in 2007. In 2010 she won silver at the U20 European Championships. In the same year she was second behind Marhinde Verkerk at the Dutch championships . In 2011 she won the U20 European Championships and finished third in the U20 World Championships. As in the previous year, she finished second at the Dutch championships, this time behind Jennifer Kuijpers . In 2012 she won her first Dutch championship title, followed by her second victory in 2013. In 2013 she won a bronze medal at the U23 European Championships. In 2014 she finished fifth at the European Championships after losing to the German Luise Malzahn in the quarter-finals .

In May 2015, Guusje Steenhuis won her first Grand Slam tournament in Baku. One month later, the European Judo Championships were held in Baku as part of the 2015 European Games. Steenhuis lost to Luise Malzahn in the quarterfinals. With victories over the Ukrainian Victoriia Turks and the French Audrey Tcheuméo , the Dutchwoman secured a bronze medal. A year later she reached the final at the 2016 European Championships in Kazan with a victory over the British Natalie Powell , where she was defeated by Audrey Tcheuméo and received the silver medal. In March 2017, Steenhuis won the Grand Slam tournament in Baku for the third time in a row. At the 2017 European Championships in Warsaw, as in the previous year, she defeated Natalie Powell in the semifinals and lost the final to Audrey Tcheuméo. In 2018 the World Championships were held in Baku. Steenhuis defeated the Chinese Ma Zhenzhao in the semi-finals . In the final she lost to the Japanese Shori Hamada . In 2019, like four years before, the European Championships took place as part of the 2019 European Games , this time the venue was Minsk. Steenhuis defeated Marhinde Verkerk in the semifinals and lost to Klara Apotekar from Slovenia in the final . This was the third time that Guusje Steenhuis won the silver medal at European Championships after 2016 and 2017.
