Natalie Powell (born October 16, 1990 in Builth Wells ) is a British judoka who won a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships.

Athletic career

The 1.75 m tall Natalie Powell fought in the middleweight division (up to 70 kilograms) until 2010 and then switched to the light heavyweight division, the weight class up to 78 kilograms. In 2013 she finished seventh at the European Championships . At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow , Powell, who was competing for Wales, met Gemma Gibbons, who was fighting for England, in the final and won. In the as part of the 2015 European Games discharged in Baku European Championships Powell finished fifth. A year later she defeated the Slovenian Anamari Velenšek in the quarter-finals at the European Championships in Kazan in 2016 and lost to the Dutch Guusje Steenhuis in the semi-finals . In 2017 Powell defeated the Slovenian Klara Apotekar in the quarter-finals of the European Championships in Warsaw . After her semi-final defeat by Guusje Steenhuis, she won the battle for bronze against the Dutchwoman Karen Stevenson . Four months later at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest, she lost to Ruika Sato in the quarterfinals , and won the battle for bronze against Marhinde Verkerk from the Netherlands . In October 2017 Powell won the Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi , defeating Guusje Steenhuis in the semifinals and Marhinde Verkerk in the final. At the European Championships in Tel Aviv in 2018 Powell won the quarter-finals over the German Anna-Maria Wagner and lost in the semi-finals to the French Madeleine Malonga . With her victory over the Portuguese Yahima Ramirez Powell won a bronze medal at European Championships for the third time in a row. Five months later she was eliminated from the World Championships in Baku in the round of 16 against Klara Apotekar. In 2019 Powell finished seventh at both the European Championships in Minsk and the World Championships in Tokyo .
