Gemma Gibbons

Gemma Jeanette Gibbons (born January 6, 1987 in Greenwich ) is a former British judoka who won an Olympic silver medal in 2012.

Athletic career

The 1.73 m tall Gemma Gibbons fought from 2003 to 2005 in the light heavyweight division and then switched to middleweight division. She won a bronze medal at the 2009 Universiade . At the end of 2009 she also won a bronze medal at the U23 European Championships. She lost to Sally Conway in the British Trials in 2012 and was slated to replace Conway in the 2012 Olympics . When the starting place in the light heavyweight division became free, Gibbons switched to the higher weight class. In June 2012 she took second place at the World Cup tournaments in Bucharest and Tallinn. At the Olympic Games in London, she defeated Marhinde Verkerk from the Netherlands in the quarter-finals and the French Audrey Tcheuméo in the semifinals . In the Olympic final, she lost to Kayla Harrison from the United States and received the silver medal.

At the 2014 Commonwealth Games , Gibbons, who were competing for England, met Natalie Powell, who was fighting for Wales, in the final and lost. At the World Judo Championships 2015 took Gibbons seventh place at the European Judo Championships in 2016 was followed by a fifth place. The British Association nominated Natalie Powell for the 2016 Olympic Games.

The sports teacher Gemma Gibbons ended her own active sports career in 2016. She is married to the judoka Euan Burton .
