Euan Burton (Judoka)

Euan Burton MBE (born March 31, 1979 in Ascot , England ) is a former British judoka .

The 1.82 m tall Euan Burton fought until 2012 mostly in the light middleweight division, the weight class up to 81 kilograms. The Edinburgh Judo Club judoka won the British Trials in 2002 and 2003. At the European Championships in 2004 , he finished fifth. The following year at the European Championships in Rotterdam in 2005 he was defeated in the semifinals to the Slovak Boris Novotny , the battle for bronze was won by Burton against the French Anthony Rodriguez . Two years later at the European Championships in Belgrade in 2007 , Burton lost in the quarter-finals against the Dutchman Guillaume Elmont , after three wins in the round of hopes Burton received a bronze medal. At the 2007 World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, he defeated Guillaume Elmont in the quarterfinals, but lost to Anthony Rodriguez in the semifinals. Burton won a bronze medal with a victory over the Italian Giuseppe Maddaloni .

At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, Burton defeated the Argentine Emmanuel Lucenti and the Moroccan Safouane Attaf, each by scoring after penalties for the opponent. In the quarterfinals he lost to the Ukrainian Roman Hontjuk by Waza-Ari. After a Waza-Ari win against the Colombian Mario Valles and a Waza-Ari defeat against the Brazilian Tiago Camilo , Burton finished in seventh place. At the European Championships 2010 in Vienna, Burton lost to Guillaume Elmont in the quarter-finals. With victories over the Moldovan Sergiu Toma and the French Antoine Jeannin , Burton won a bronze medal. Four and a half months later at the 2010 World Championships in Tokyo he lost to the Japanese Masahiro Takamatsu in the quarter-finals , and Burton won bronze with victories over Guillaume Elmont and the Brazilian Flávio Canto . At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Euan Burton was defeated by the Canadian Antoine Valois-Fortier in his opening match .

In 2013, Burton moved two weight classes up to light heavyweight up to 100 kilograms. At the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Burton won this weight class for Scotland and then ended his active career. He has been a member of the Order of the British Empire since 2015.

Burton is a judo trainer in Scotland, he is married to the judoka Gemma Gibbons .
