Sergiu Toma (born January 29, 1987 in Chișinău , Moldovan SSR ) is a former Moldovan judoka who has competed for the United Arab Emirates since 2013 . He won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics.

Career

In 2005 Toma won the U20 European Championships in the light weight division. The following year he finished seventh in the lightweight at the U20 World Championships. In 2007 he won a bronze medal at the Universiade. In 2008 he won the World Cup tournament in Paris. At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 he was eliminated in his first fight against the Georgian David Kevkhishvili .

After the Olympic Games, the 1.80 m tall Toma switched to the light middleweight division, the weight class up to 81 kilograms. At the 2011 European Championships in Istanbul, he defeated the German Ole Bischof in the quarter-finals and the Russian Sirazhudin Magomedov in the semifinals . After his final defeat against the Azerbaijani Elnur Məmmədli , he received the silver medal. At the 2011 World Championships in Paris, he was defeated by the Brazilian Leandro Guilheiro in the quarter-finals , and Toma won a bronze medal with victories over the Ukrainian Artem Wassylenko and the French Loïc Pietri . At the 2012 Olympic Games , he won his first fight against the Czech Jaromír Musil , but then retired against the Japanese Takahiro Nakai . In October 2012 he finished third at the Grand Slam tournament in Abu Dhabi, it was his last successful tournament as a Moldovan.

A year later he won the tournament in Abu Dhabi. At the same tournament, Victor Scvortov won another judoka who had moved from the Republic of Moldova to the United Arab Emirates. In 2014 Toma was third at the tournament in Abu Dhabi, in 2015 second behind the Bulgarian Iwajlo Ivanov . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Toma defeated the German Sven Maresch and the Brazilian Victor Penalber prematurely. In the quarterfinals against the Japanese Takanori Nagase , he had to play for the full time. After the semi-final defeat against the Russian Khassan Chalmursajew he defeated the Italian Matteo Marconcini after 2:16 minutes in the battle for a bronze medal . In 2017 Toma won the Abu Dhabi tournament.

In 2018 he switched to middleweight up to 90 kilograms. At the 2018 Asian Games , he was eliminated in the first round.
