The 18th Asian Games took place from August 18 to September 2, 2018 in Jakarta , the capital of Indonesia , and the city of Palembang . The main venue was the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.

Award

The Vietnamese capital Hanoi was originally selected in the application process to host the 2019 Games. Hanoi prevailed in the decisive vote of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) on November 8, 2012 against the application from Surabaya (Indonesia). Dubai (United Arab Emirates) withdrew its candidacy during the meeting. In April 2014, the Vietnamese government officially announced that Vietnam was unable to host the games and returned the order. Jakarta was selected for the new award.

The Games were to take place for the first time outside of the previous four-year rhythm after the OCA decided on July 3, 2009 to always hold them in the year before the Summer Olympics. This plan was rejected.
