All-Korean team

The all-Korean team is the name given to teams at international sporting events made up of North and South Korean athletes. A white flag with the blue silhouette of the Korean peninsula (as a symbol of a united North and South Korea ) and the popular Korean folk song Arirang serve as symbols of the whole Korean team .

Participation

Junior World Cup 1991

South Korea and North Korea would have both qualified for the 1991 Junior World Cup in Portugal after finishing first and second in the 1990 U-19 Asian Football Championship , but the two Korean football associations agreed on an all-Korean football team for the first time since the division of Korea . The team consisted of 10 players from South and 8 players from North Korea. Korea survived the preliminary round against Argentina, Ireland and the reigning world champions and hosts Portugal, but lost 5-1 to Brazil in the quarterfinals and were eliminated. After that, the all-Korean U-20 soccer team disbanded.

Table tennis world championship 1991

In February 1991, North and South Korea agreed for the second time on an all-Korean team for the 1991 World Table Tennis Championships in Chiba , Japan. The victory at the World Cup against the “invincible” women's team from China was a great sensation in Korea.

Olympic Winter Games 2018

For the first time since 1991, South Korea and North Korea agreed to form an all-Korean women's ice hockey team for the 2018 Winter Olympics . The team started as Korea (IOC code: COR).

In 2007 there was an attempt to form an all-Korean team from North and South Korean athletes for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , but this failed.

Table tennis world championship 2018

After the declaration of peace signed in Panmunjom on April 27, 2018 , the South and North Korean women's teams announced at the World Table Tennis Championships in Halmstad , Sweden , that they would not compete in the quarter-finals and instead play as a team in the semi-finals. There, the team lost to Japan 3-0.

Handball World Championship 2019

At the men's handball world championship 2019 , the South Korean national team , which had qualified third in the Asian Cup, was reinforced by four players from the North Korean team and came in 22nd out of 24 places.

At the following international sporting events, the teams from the Republic of Korea and Korea DPR marched into the stadium together at the opening ceremony:

The joint invasion does not mean that the two Korean teams will take part in the games together.
