Halmstad was originally located a little further up the Nissan, where the Övraby district is now, which at that time was still an independent village. The village was mentioned as early as the 13th century and received its privileges on May 31, 1307 from Duke Kristofer, later King Christoph II . A little later around 1322, the village was moved to Braktorp at the mouth of the Nissan, where it is still located today. The new town had the name Halmstad at least as early as 1327. The place name Halmstad was mentioned in 1231 as a royal court in the Danish King Waldemar II's earth book . The city soon became the most distinguished on the west coast and therefore also a meeting place for the Scandinavian imperial councils. B. 1435, 1450, 1468, 1483 and 1512.

Following the proposal of the Kalmar Union of 1436 and the treaty of 1450, Halmstad was supposed to hold the king's election, but this never happened. The city had two monasteries, that of the Dominican Order , to which the Church of St. Katarina was consecrated, and that of the Franciscan Order , to which the Church of St. Anne was consecrated. In both 1434 and 1436 Halmstad was conquered by Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson and his troops. In 1534 the city came under a Swedish army under Johan Turesson and the following year a Danish attack under Count Johann von Hoya was repulsed by Jakob Bagge. The peace negotiations took place in the city, but the Nordic Seven Years War broke out and the city was attacked in vain by the Swedish side in 1563, 1566 and 1568.

The palace was only built towards the end of the 16th century, and under Christian IV at the beginning of the 17th century it was further expanded and fortified by the master builder Willem van Steenwinckel . In 1619 Gustav Adolf and Christian IV met in Halmstad. After Halmstad and the rest of Halland had been handed over to Sweden, in 1646 a proposal was made to build a citadel. This was later changed to a section between the castle and the city, so that the work could begin in 1648, but it was not finished before the war Charles X against Denmark.

In 1651 plans for a further improvement of the city were presented, but even after the plan was simplified in 1655 little happened. Halmstad was besieged in 1676 by the Danes under Major General Duncan. In September of that year even by the Danish king personally, but this was not successful either. After the war, the fortification was maintained for some time, but a plan to strengthen it was no longer implemented. In the early 18th century, the fortification was repaired again, but the Reichstag in 1734 approved the razing . Not everything was removed at that time. B. still today the northern gate of the fortification.

In 1883 Halmstad had 8,966 inhabitants.
