Van Steenwinckel was a son of the Royal Danish builder Hans van Steenwinckel . He went to Willem Cornelisz. in Laholm and Halmstad (today Halland Province in Sweden). He rose to become a royal builder with the construction of Laholm Castle and became a fortress builder in Halmstad around 1625. In 1629 he came to the Schleswig-Holstein government in Glückstadt as a master builder and in 1630/31 built the now no longer preserved Glückstadt Palace , the town hall (1642/43) and the new district on the island of Rethöwel on behalf of the building-loving King Christian IV . He also built the Brockdorff Palace for the fortress commander Count Pentz .

He was appointed master builder in Glückstadt on February 28, 1630. He was the brother of Hans and Morten Steenwinckel. On January 3, 1635, King Christian assigned him 2000 Reichstaler. After the death of King Christian IV, he returned to Copenhagen. In 1649 he complained there to King Friedrich III. that he was in distress whereupon he received some minor payments. Further demands are known up to June 22nd, 1653, after which it is no longer mentioned.
