Hans van Steenwinckel the Younger (born June 24, 1587 in Copenhagen ; † August 6, 1639 there ) was a builder and sculptor. He came from the Flemish artist family Steenwinckel , who worked in Denmark in the 16th and 17th centuries. He was like his father Hans I. and later his son Hans III. Royal builder in Denmark.

Life

Van Steenwinckel first learned the bricklaying trade from his father in Halmstad at the age of thirteen . After his father's death in 1601, he continued his apprenticeship with his successor Willem Cornelissen. Around 1602 he traveled to the Netherlands with his older brother Lourens (Lorenz), where he became a student of the Amsterdam city architect Hendrick de Keyser . It is not known exactly when Steenwinckel returned to Denmark from Holland. From 1614 he was involved in the construction of Frederiksborg Castle . In 1619 he was appointed general builder and construction began on Børsen . He took over the further expansion of the fortress Varberg , which had already started under his father. In 1629 he was responsible for the reconstruction of Kronborg Castle after the fire and by 1634 he completed the new Rosenborg Castle for King Christian IV . In 1637 he started the Rundetårn , which was only completed after his death. For the castle in Tåsinge he delivered the draft in 1639.

In 1638 Karel van Mander (1609–1670) painted the picture of King Christian IV on horseback in front of Rosenborg Castle. On the right presumably Hans van Steenwinckel the Elder. J.

His father was the architect Hans van Steenwinckel, his mother was Inger (née Pedersdatter, † after 1630). He himself was married to Trine Willom (nee Hybersdatter, † 1674). The couple had several children. Steenwinckel died during an epidemic that killed two of his sons and the son of a brother just a few weeks later. He was buried at the Nicolai Church, which he helped to restore in 1630. An epitaph donated by his widow in 1644 was lost. The inscription was related to the painting that shows King Christian IV in front of Rosenborg Castle, on which Steenwinckel is said to be depicted. It read:

“The Ingeniør eller Bygmester, who he portrætteret paa Rosenborg-Billedet af Christian IV. Foran Rosenborg under Voldarbejdet, he med rings Sandsynlighed stundom kaldt H. v. S. "

“The engineer and master builder who is depicted in the Rosenborg picture of Christian IV in front of Rosenborg while completing his work is very likely to be considered H. v. S. designated. "

His brothers were:

  • Lourens (Lorenz or Laurens) van Steenwinckel (* 1585; † 1619), who was also a master builder, but also a sculptor.
  • Villum (Willem) van Steenwinckel (approx. 1590 - 1653) worked as a builder at Laholm Castle.
  • Morten van Steenwinckel (born July 3, 1595 in Varberg, † December 9, 1646) was an architect and painter. He provided some paintings for Rosenborg and Kronborg.
