Tåsinge is a Danish island south of Fyn ( German  Fyn ). The name of the island comes from the earlier names Thorsinge or Thorsenge (probably Thor's bed ). It has 6213 inhabitants (January 1, 2020). The two largest cities on Tåsinge are Vindeby and Troense .

The island is divided into three parishes ( Danish : Sogn ): from north to south Bregninge Sogn , Landet Sogn and Bjerreby Sogn . Until 1970 they belonged to Harde Sunds Herred in what was then Svendborg Office , then to Svendborg Municipality in Fyns Office , which in turn became part of the expanded Svendborg Municipality in the Syddanmark region as part of the local government reform on January 1, 2007 .

geography

The island has an area of about 70 km². Svendborgsund runs between Tåsinge and Fyn . To the west of the island, between Inselrø and Tåsinge, are the small islands of Skarø , Drejø , Hjortø , Birkholm , Store- and Lille Egholm . South of Tåsinge is the small island of Strynø along with the even smaller Strynø Kalv , to the south-east the small island of Siø and to the east the much larger island of Langeland . The island of Thurø is northeast of Tåsinge .

prehistory

Not many prehistoric monuments have been preserved on Tåsinge. The largest is the 7 m high Ingershøj from the Bronze Age . There are six other hills nearby. Urns and bronze objects were found in three of them . Through active reconnaissance, 37 new cup stones have been found on the island since 1976 , most of them in the woods. The best preserved bowl stone can be seen in the garden of the Bregninge Museum. In the museum you can also see 5 of 13 so-called “Lommeskålsten”. Small stones in which a single bowl is sunk and which may have served as amulets. In the garden of the museum there is an almost 3.0 m long stone box with two threshold stones. The box originally came from a mound excavated in 1974 near Lundby on Tåsinge. In addition to the enamel of an adult, a battle ax, a small cup from the dagger age and a flint dagger from the older Bronze Age were found in the grave .

45 megalithic structures of the funnel beaker culture (TBK) are registered on Tåsinge , but only a few have been preserved. In Ny Gesinge lies the 40 m long Capeshøj . The almost complete curb is impressive here. There are two locked megalithic complexes nearby. One of the rare stone boxes of the individual grave culture was excavated 200 m west of Bjerreby church . Like the pear-shaped chambers of the TBK, the system narrows in the access area.

Culture and sights

Sankt Jørgens Kirke

On Tåsinge is the Valdemars Slot , a castle that King Christian IV had built between 1639 and 1644 for his son Waldemar Christian (1622–1656).

Elvira Madigan and Sixten Sparre, one of Scandinavia's most famous lovers, who were found shot in 1889 in Nørreskov (northern forest), are buried in the cemetery in Landet (Danish: Landet kirkegård ) .

Tåsinge Vejle in the west of the island , a lagoon with an average depth of only 0.6 m, is home to many species of birds, especially during the breeding season, which can be observed from a hut in the east of the wetland.

Transport and infrastructure

In the north the island is connected to Svendborg and Fyn by the Svendborgsundbroen . In the southeast the Siøsundbroen leads to the island of Siø . From there the Langelandsbroen leads to Langeland .

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route ( EuroVelo route 10) leads across the island and connects it so u. a. with Copenhagen.
