Levees
There are two dike rings on the island that are supposed to protect the island from flooding. The outer dike ring is about 1.8 meters high and includes many pastures. The inner dike ring is about 2.8 meters high and only surrounds the town center.
port
The port in Birkholm has a landing stage for the mail boat that carries mail, people and goods. The port also has berths for boats from islanders and around ten berths for pleasure craft. In summer, significantly more pleasure craft squeeze into the harbor. The port has a depth of about 1.8 meters. There is electricity, but no fresh water in the port. The only tap is in the town center, where there is a shower. The toilets and sinks at the harbor have a sea water connection.
retail trade
There is a small, trustworthy self-service shop on the island. The buyers take the goods and put the money in a prepared bowl. Fresh bread and ice cream are available in the shop.
