The Birkholm is a Danish motor ship that has been serving the Marstal - Birkholm ferry route since 2011 .

The ferry route is Denmark's smallest post ship connection.

History and traffic

Kathot

The ship was built in 2002 by the Finnish shipyard Botnia Marin in Malax under the name Kathot . The hull is made of glass fiber reinforced plastic .

The ship was owned by Helge Israelsen from Hellerup , for whom the ship was moored in Tuborg Havn in Copenhagen . On June 23, 2011 the ship was sold to the company Leasing Fyn Bank A / S in Faaborg for future use on the ferry route to Birkholm for the price of 1.248.000  DKK .

On the night of June 1, 2011, the ship was transferred from Tuborg Havn to Birkholm. Due to the powerful engine, the route only took five hours.

Birkholm

When the owner was changed on June 28, 2011, the name was changed to Birkholm . The ship was classified as a cargo ship by the shipping authorities . As of July 20, 2011, the regular liner service between Marstal and Birkholm resumed after the predecessor ship Birkholmposten was decommissioned in autumn 2010 due to technical problems.

In contrast to the post ships that were previously used on the line and operated by the municipality, Jan Fabricius leased the ship and operated the ferry crossing on his own account.

In a new measurement on December 18, 2012, 5.0 GRT / 1.5 NRT were determined.

In the summer season (mid-May to mid-September) the boat runs from Marstal to Birkholm twice a day from Monday to Friday, the rest of the time there is only one crossing, but only if seats have been booked the day before or mail is to be delivered. The boat does not operate on the weekends. The crossing takes 20 minutes.

For special trips to Birkholm for the transport of larger items such as building materials that the mailboat cannot carry, the ferry Hjortøboen , which is based on the island of Hjortø , can be ordered. The purchaser is responsible for the necessary mooring, especially in the summer season in the harbor of Birkholm, which is overcrowded with sailing boats.
