The Birkholmposten is a Danish motor ship that operated the Marstal - Birkholm ferry route from 2006 to 2010 . It replaced a ferry of the same name, Birkholm-Posten, built in 1976 .

The ferry route is Denmark's smallest post ship connection and was operated by the Marstal port administration.

Technical specifications

The ship built on Faaborg Værft in 2006 corresponds to the Faaborg 900 type . The hull of the ship is built like a trimaran . In the front part there is the cabin for twelve passengers, in the rear there is space for cargo. The ship is steered from a steering position behind the cabin.

The Ærø municipality owned ship was classified by the naval supervisory authority in class F as a cargo ship , with the permission to carry up to 12 passengers.

During the entire operating time, the ship had problems due to noise, vibrations and poor maneuverability, especially in strong winds. The consequence of this was that the ship had to go slower and so could not keep to the schedule. At the time of approval by the supervisory authority, fewer pass-through areas were approved than originally intended.

In addition, the boat was not allowed to be used when there was ice. The port administration's boat Erria, which was then used to transport mail, was not allowed to carry passengers and so the island of Birkholm was often inaccessible for people in winter.

In autumn 2010 the ship was withdrawn from service.

It was brought to the manufacturer's yard for a full renovation, which was completed on September 8, 2011. The ship has been privately owned since then.

traffic

When it was in use, the boat traveled the route four times a day in summer and twice a day in winter. The crossing took 25 minutes.

From autumn 2010 the ship Birkholm took over the ferry route.

For special trips to Birkholm for the transport of larger items such as building materials that the mailboat cannot carry, the ferry Hjortøboen , which is based on the island of Hjortø , can be ordered. The purchaser is responsible for the necessary mooring, especially in the summer season in the harbor that is overcrowded with sailing boats.
