Ærø Kommune is a Danish municipality. The municipality includes the island of Ærø south of Funen and some smaller islands. It has a total population of 5964 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) and an area of 90.10 km². The seat of the administration is in Ærøskøbing .
Until the German-Danish War in 1864, Ærø belonged to the Duchy of Schleswig . In the border regulation in the Peace of Vienna , it went directly to the Kingdom of Denmark. Until 1970 it formed its own Harde Ærø Herred in what was then Svendborg Office ; then the municipalities originated on the island of Marstal and Ærøskøbing in the County of Funen that so, just a year before January 1, 2006 municipal reform on 1 January 2007 have been merged into the "new" community and since the municipal reform to Syddanmark region include .
