The Sønderborg Kommune ( Eng : Kommune Sonderburg ) is a Danish municipality in the Syddanmark region .

It was created on the occasion of the structural reform that has been pushed in Denmark since 2002 . Since January 1, 2007, the new large commune has consisted of the "old" Sønderborg commune and the previous communes of Gråsten (German: Gravenstein ), Broager (German: Broacker ), Sundeved (German: Sundewitt ), Sydals (German: Südalsen ), Augustenborg (German: Augustenburg ) and Nordborg (German: Norburg ). It thus covers the entire island of Als (German: Alsen ) and most of the Sundeved peninsula (German: Sundewitt ) and is therefore larger than the former Sønderborg Amt (1920–32) (the area of the later Gråsten municipality belonged to Åbenrå Office ) and the district of Sonderburg (1869–1920). On January 1, 2020 there were 74,220 inhabitants in the municipality. The administration is based in Sønderborg .
