Skelde ( German  Schelde ) is a Danish village that belongs to the Sønderborg municipality on the Flensburg Fjord . It is located in the east of Broager Land and belongs to Broager Sogn .

history

The background to the naming of the place is unclear. The Skeldes grave mound testifies to thousands of years of settlement activity. The burial mound consists of three graves. Its oldest component comes from the peasant days around 3500 BC. Between 1400 and 1200 BC it was apparently expanded and so re-used. "Schelde" could already be found on the Mejersche map from 1665. A village school was founded in Schelde in 1703. As early as 1872 the village of Schelde was a larger street village . The old courtyards of the village apparently still lie along the streets Midtballe, Østerballe and Overballe. The inn in the village of Frøken Jensen has existed since 1888.

In 1910 the Wester Satrup – Schelde railway , which ran from Sottrup via Nübel and Broacker to Schelde, was put into operation by the Prussian State Railways . Skelde came to Denmark during the referendum in Schleswig (1920). Since then, the place name is no longer officially spelled "Schelde", as in German times, but "Skelde". The economic trade relations in the Flensburg area changed considerably as a result of the demarcation. In 1932 the railway line was closed. The station building was preserved ( location ). Today (2020) about 280 inhabitants live in Skelde.

Tower Hill Castle Skelde and Skeldegård Farm

The tower hill castle is located at the end of the street Overballe in the front garden area of the yard number 29 ( location ). The exact age of the tower hill castle is unclear. The tower hill castle Skelde consists of a circular island surrounded by a moat. In the area around Flensburg, numerous tower hill castles were built over the centuries, such as Niehuus Castle , which was built to protect Flensburg among others . On the opposite side of the fjord, near Holnis , the Wahrberg served as an observation post on the fjord in order to be able to warn the inhabitants in the event of enemy ships. - Not far from the Skelde Tower Hill Castle is Skeldegård, which has been on display since the 16th century and which also has a moat.
