Kværs Sogn ( German: Quars ) is a parish municipality ( Danish : Sogn ) in North Schleswig in southern Denmark . Originally it belonged to Harde Lundtoft Herred in what was then Aabenraa-Sønderborg Amt and already joined together in 1968 with two neighboring churches to form Gråsten Municipality , which after the municipal reform in 1970 belonged to the newly created Sønderjyllands Amt . As part of the local government reform on January 1, 2007, the municipality was incorporated into the “new” Sønderborg municipality in the Syddanmark region .

Municipal area

Kværs is located in the western part of Sundeved (German: Sundewitt ), the peninsula between Aabenraa Fjord (German: Apenrader Förde ), Als Sund (German: Alsensund ) and Flensburg Fjord . The land is fertile and used to be ruled by large aristocratic estates.

Neighboring communities are Felsted Sogn (Ger. Feldstedt ), Gråsten-Adsbøl Sogn (Ger: Gravenstein-Atzbüll ), Rinkenæs Sogn (Ger. Rinkenis ) and Holbøl Sogn (Ger. Holebüll ).

Today 997 people live in the community, 397 of them in the community center (as of January 1, 2020).

history

Kværs is one of the smallest parishes in North Schleswig . Since the originally sovereign castle Søgård (Eng. Seegaard ) was pledged in the 14th century and then permanently in aristocratic hands, large estates, mostly in association with Søgård, have ruled the community's residents. The Laygaard farm , which became independent in 1725 after the bankruptcy of Søgård-Gråsten, came into being. It was not until 1853 that all goods in this area were combined again to form the original Lundtoft harde , which from then on was a unified legal district and was subordinate to the Aabenraa office .

In 1867 the Duchy of Schleswig fell to Prussia. The office of Aabenraa was converted to the district of Aabenraa with almost unchanged borders . Quars and Törsbüll, like the Laygaard manor district, became independent communities. From 1889 Quars and Törsbüll belonged to the Rinkenis district, while Laygaard formed its own district despite its small size. After the referendum in Schleswig in 1920, the community became Danish and again formed its own parish in the newly established Åbenrå office . Before the great municipal reform in 1970, it merged with Rinkenæs and Gråsten in 1968.

Economy and Transport

Kværs is a little off the main traffic routes and has an agricultural structure. Although the electrified Sønderborg – Tinglev railway runs from Tinglev ( Tingleff ) to Sønderborg through the municipality, Tørsbøl ( German  Törsbüll ) station has been idle since 1975, as have the neighboring stations Lundtoft and Rinkenæs. Next stations are in the West Kliplev ( German  Klipleff ) and to the east Gråsten. The Tørsbøl – Padborg section of the original Flensburg –Sønderborg route was given up in 1932.

Attractions

Kværs has a Romanesque towerless stone church with a free-standing wooden bell tower ( bell stack ) from the 12th century.

The former "Küsterhof" with accommodation for the parishioner next to the church, which contained two classrooms, is an accessible monument in the Molfsee Open-Air Museum - State Museum for Folklore in Molfsee .
