The Augustenborg cemetery was originally laid out as a military cemetery in 1848 after a military hospital for the Danish troops was established in the castle after the ducal family had fled. During the Schleswig-Holstein War , which ended for Denmark in 1851, a total of 241 soldiers were buried here, and in the German-Danish War (1864) many soldiers - the exact number is not known - found their last resting place here. After the war, the dukes had to give up the castle. In 1866 it fell to Prussia. As the last, some German soldiers from the Franco-German War (1870–1871) received military burials in the Augustenborg cemetery.

After the cemetery was expanded in 1869, it was also used by the residents of Augustenborg. In 1932 a psychiatric hospital was set up in the castle, and part of the cemetery was earmarked for the graves of the patients.

Attractions

In 1651 Duke Ernst Günther , who had the title of duke but had no fiefdom of his own, bought some estates on Alsen from the Danish king. Most of them were torn down, but Augustenborg Castle was built on the site of the most beautiful one in the village of Stavensböl from 1661 (reconstruction from 1770 to 1776) and named after Ernst Günther's wife, Auguste von Sonderburg-Glücksburg. From then until 1852 the castle was the headquarters of the Duke family of Augustenborg. Stucco work by the Italian Michelangelo Taddei can be found on the castle .

The castle is not open to the public.
