Van Steenwinckel learned from his father Laurenz van Steenwinckel (1517–1585) in Flanders and Emden , where his father became a city architect and built the Emden town hall . His mother was Alyt (nee van Dale). In 1574, Steenwinckel is documented in connection with an invoice for the town hall building in Emden. Since the spring of 1578 he has been recorded in Denmark, where he was involved in the renovation of Kronborg Castle . Here his connection to the astronomer Tycho Brahe arose , who promoted him and introduced him to the developments of architecture in Italy. For Tycho Brahe, Steenwinckel built his buildings on the island of Hven in the Öresund , such as the Uraniborg observation castle and the Stjerneborg observatory . In 1582 he was appointed Royal Master Builder, in 1588 Danish Imperial Master Builder. Steenwinckel built numerous fortresses in Norway ( Akershus ), Bohuslän and Halland . He ran his sculpting workshop with his sons in Varberg . The expansion of the fortress Varberg was continued by his son Hans. His tombstone from his own workshop is in the vestibule of the church in Halmstadt.

He was married to Inger (nee Pedersdatter, † after 1630).
