The Västkustbana ( German  West Coast Railway ) is a 290 km long railway line in Sweden between Gothenburg and Lund .

The single-track line was built in 1888 as a connection between several connected private railways and was nationalized in 1896.

expansion

Since 1985, the line has been continuously expanded to two - track in several construction phases . It was redrawn on longer sections. In 2008 the line was double-tracked to 234 km, 56 km were single-track. The expanded sections are designed for a top speed of up to 250 km / h. The train protection system and the trains currently in use only allow a speed of 200 km / h.

The largest section of new construction is the route over Hallandsåsen , which leads through a tunnel. The construction of the Hallandsås tunnel , which began in 1993, was repeatedly delayed by water ingress. It was completed with the start of trial operation on December 8, 2015 and regular operation on December 13, 2015. The expansion to double-track operation was completed with the commissioning of the tunnel.

Åsa station reopened at the end of 2013.
