history
Originally Höganäs was a fishing village around which a mining industry developed, the coal and clay mined. From this the refractory ceramics Höganäskrus were made. The mining industry is now closed, but the Höganäs Keramik ceramics company still exists.
The village was first mentioned in 1488 under the old name Höyenaess . In 1936 Höganäs was granted city rights. On January 1, 2009, the “Euro-City” project started in Höganäs, which established the euro as the official currency alongside the Swedish krona. The common currency is accepted in most shops and can be withdrawn from ATMs.
Höganäs received a railway connection in 1885. The Åstorp – Kattarp – Höganäs line was mainly financed by the metal powder manufacturer Höganäs AB . In 1910 the Höganäs – Mölle railway was put into operation; It was largely financed by private investors such as hotel owners. The two railway lines were not connected until 1919. In this year the Centralstation (central station) was put into operation. In 1937 the line from Kattarp to Mölle was electrified. The line to Mölle was closed in 1963. There is now a cycle path on the route. 1972 the passenger traffic to Kattarp was stopped, 1992 the freight traffic. In 1997 this line was also dismantled. Today the municipal administration is located in the station building designed by Folke Zettervall .
