With a length of about 200 km, Nissan is one of the longer rivers in southern Sweden .
The river rises from a high moor south of Jönköping and has a north-westerly direction of flow at the beginning. Then it turns to the southwest and flows through Småland and Halland until it flows into the Kattegat at Halmstad . Several industrial plants were built on the river, which deprived the water of its flow force. For anglers, the river's salmon and trout are important.
In 1062 the naval battle at the mouth of the Nissan River took place here.
An old trade route runs along the Nissan, which was formerly called Nissastigen and is now called Riksväg 25 . Since 1877 there has also been a railway line from Halmstad to Värnamo , which follows the river in the southern part.
