January 1941 in Bredy , Chelyabinsk Oblast , RSFSR ; † July 2, 2015 in Lviv , Ukraine ) was a Soviet weightlifter .

Career

Petro Korol grew up in Lviv. As a teenager, he tried his hand at various sports before he as already more than twenty years old in the Soviet Army the weightlifting turned. In the mid-1960s he had reached the top class of the Soviet lightweight with his achievements. From 1966 he started regularly with very good results at the Soviet championships, but stagnated in his development until 1970. It was not until 1971, when he was already over thirty, that he made a big leap forward and from then on he was also used in international championships. At the European Championships in 1971 he was there for the first time as a substitute, but was allowed to make a world record attempt in pushing out of competition, which succeeded with 173.5 kg. In 1972 he became the first Soviet champion. His disappointment, however, was great when it was not him, but the second-placed Mucharbi Kirschinow, who was used at the Olympic Games in Munich . However, he remained active and received his reward for his perseverance from 1974 to 1976. During these years he was world champion seven times and even Olympic champion in Montreal because the Pole Zbigniew Kaczmarek , who was actually placed before him, was subsequently disqualified for doping and had to surrender his gold medal to Petro Korol.

In 1977 the officer ended his active career in the Soviet Army.
