Career

Viktor Buschujew came from Gorky on the Volga and did various sports as a boy until he decided to lift up weights. The trained fitter began to compete in regional featherweight championships and then grew into the lightweight (up to 67.5 kg body weight). In 1956 he first drew attention to himself when he took third place behind former world champions Nikolai Saksonow and Fedor Nikitin at the championships of the RSFSR in lightweight with 355 kg . Just one year later he was used at the world championships in Tehran and immediately won the world title in lightweight. The highlight of his career was the 1960 Olympic victory in Rome , again in the lightweight. Viktor Buschujew was a very balanced and reliable weightlifter who could not set a world record in any of the three individual disciplines of pushing, snatching and pushing, but five in the Olympic three-way fight.
