Joachim Kunz (born February 9, 1959 in Stollberg ) is a former German weightlifter. He was the only Olympic champion in weightlifting in the GDR ( 1988 ).

Career

Kunz, who in Saxony Lugau grew up, began in Lichtenstein with the gymnastics , which he at the children's and youth sports school in Karl-Marx-Stadt continued. There he switched to weightlifting after recognizing his favorable conditions for it. Kunz made great progress and started successfully in 1978 for the first time in a Junior World Championship. After finishing school, Kunz continued his sporting career at SC Karl-Marx-Stadt and in the eighties belonged to the world elite in the light and middleweight division. The 1988 Olympic victory in Seoul crowned the career of the trained toolmaker . For this victory he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in Gold.

Towards the end of the 1980s, Kunz began studying sports at the DHfK in Leipzig , which he broke off during the political change in 1990. After a professional reorientation, Kunz founded Mico GmbH in Oederan in 1998 . His company produces soup dishes and owns the suppina and Tempolinsen food brands .

Joachim Kunz was GDR lightweight champion in 1979, 1980 and 1981 and middleweight in 1983, 1984, 1987 and 1989. In addition, he won the title of German team champion in 1990 with the Bavarian TSV Regen .
