World weightlifting championships
The world weightlifting championships for men have existed since 1891, those for women since 1987. The organization and control of the implementation is the responsibility of the world weightlifting organization, the International Weightlifting Federation .
Event cycle
The world championships have been held annually since 1937, although the competitions were suspended between 1939 and 1945 due to the Second World War . Only in the years of the Summer Olympics are there generally no world championships. The women's competitions introduced in 1987 were an exception to this, until they were finally included in the Olympic program in 2000 . In the six games between 1964 and 1984, the Olympic weightlifting competitions had World Cup status.
Weight classes
The number of weight classes for men was gradually increased from three to ten from 1913 to 1977, but the classes were again reduced in 1998. This was done with a view to the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Sydney , at which women's weightlifting was to celebrate its premiere. The men are currently competing in eight and the women in seven different weight classes ( see table ).

- ↑ The 1967 World Championships were to take place in Tokyo. The Japanese government banned both the raising of the GDR flag and the playing of the GDR national anthem at the World Cup when an East German athlete won. The GDR, in turn, insisted on hoisting its flag and playing the anthem. Since there was no agreement, the Japanese Association finally canceled the World Cup.
