Wassili Ivanovich Alexejew ( Russian Василий Иванович Алексеев ; born January 7, 1942 in Pokrovo-Schischkino , Ryazan Oblast ; † November 25, 2011 in Munich ) was a Soviet weightlifter .

Career

Alexejew won the Olympic gold medal in the super heavyweight division in 1972 and 1976 and won numerous titles at world and European championships. During this time Alexejew set 80 world records, which is unmatched to this day. Alexeyev was one of the few weightlifters who gained worldwide fame through their sport.

Life

Vasily Alexejew was the fourth child of a factory worker in Pokrovo Shishkino in central Russia; When he was eleven, his family moved to Rotschegda in Arkhangelsk Oblast , where he regularly helped with woodwork in the summer. After finishing school in Arkhangelsk , he studied at the wood technology institute. As early as 1955, he took part regularly in regional and regional weightlifting championships and continued to train during his studies. In the 1960s he worked as a shift supervisor in a paper and cellulose factory.

Despite his regional successes, Alexeyev was largely unknown at the IV People's Partakiade of the USSR in 1967 when he surprisingly defeated the then master Leonid Shabotinsky . At the V. Völkerspartakiade in 1970 he was already the "star" and set seven world records in one evening.

After his successes at the Olympic Games in 1972 and 1976, Alexejew also became internationally known. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, however, he was already unable to cope with the initial weight: his streak of success came to an end. Since 1980 he worked as a coach in the city of Shakhty in Rostov Oblast . From 1990 to 1992 he was national coach of the USSR and CIS. Under his leadership, a United Team won ten medals in Barcelona in 1992 , five of which were gold medals.

Alexeyev last lived as a pensioner in Shakhty, whose honorary citizen he became in 1996 and which a school named after him. Vasily Ivanovich Alexejew died on November 25, 2011 in a Munich clinic, where he had gone to treat a heart disease.
