Hossein Rezazadeh ( Persian حسین رضازاده; * May 12, 1978 in Ardabil ) is a former Iranian weightlifter , two-time Olympic champion and sports official.

Career

Rezazadeh's first international appearance was the Junior World Championships in 1998 in Sofia , where he started at the age of 21 with a body weight of 133.85 kg in the super heavyweight over 105 kg. After 170.0 kg in the snatch, which meant sixth place, he failed to bring in a valid attempt in the push and thus remained unplaced in the duel. At the Asian Games in the same year he reached third place with 415.0 kg (187.5 / 227.5 kg) in a duel.

Just one year later he was able to achieve 447.5 kg (206.0 / 242.5 kg) at his first senior world championships, which placed him behind Andrei Tschemerkin with 457.5 kg and Jaber Saeed Salem with 455.0 kg. After the restructuring of the weight classes and the associated cancellation of the existing world records, Rezazadeh set a new world record in a snap. With this performance he was one of the favorites at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and with an increase to 472.5 kg (212.5 / 260.0 kg), which was a new world record in snatching as well as in duels, he won his first Olympic gold medal. Ronny Weller came in second with 467.5 kg, ahead of Tschemerkin with 462.5 kg.

In 2002 Rezazadeh won the Asian Games in Busan without any serious competition and failed here because of a new world record attempt of 263.0 kg in the push. However, he was able to achieve this at the World Cup in Warsaw. Here he set his best performance and again achieved 472.5 kg (210.0 / 263.0 kg) and won ahead of Damjan Damjanow with 450.0 kg and Artem Udachin with 440.0 kg.

At the Asian Championships 2003 in Qinhuangdao , Rezazadeh was able to improve his own world record in snatching to 213.0 kg. Just four months later, he tried to outdo it again at the World Championships in Vancouver . After 207.5 kg in the second attempt, he failed at 213.5 kg. Rezazadeh opened in the push with 250.0 kg, which immediately brought him the title in the push and also in the duel. In the second attempt at pushing, he put 263.5 kg on, which he failed here. With the so achieved 457.5 kg (207.5 / 250.0 kg) he placed in front of Welitschko Tscholakow with 447.5 kg and Viktors Ščerbatihs with 445.0 kg.

With a mean competition weight of 162.95 kg and the performances from previous years, Rezazadeh entered the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens as the clear favorite for the title . He was able to confidently confirm this assessment with 472.5 kg (210.0 / 263.5 kg) in a duel and a new world record in jerking of 263.5 kg. Ščerbatihs finished second with 455.0 kg in front of Tscholakow with 447.5 kg.

In the following year he was able to win both the Asian Championships in Dubai and the World Championships in Doha with 460.0 kg (200.0 / 260.0 kg) and 461.0 kg (210.0 / 251.0 kg) . He only had to cede his world title to Yevgeny Tschigischew , who tore 211.0 kg. In the second attempt at pushing, Rezazadeh tried 263.0 kg, which would have meant a new world record in duels with the 210.0 kg in snatch after the introduction of the 1-kg rule.

In 2006 Rezazadeh took part in international competitions for the last time. With a performance of 448.0 kg (202.0 / 246.0 kg) and 425.0 kg (195.0 / 230.0 kg) he was able to win the World Cup in Santo Domingo and the Asian Games in Doha .

In 2007, Rezazadeh suffered a knee injury in a car accident. Shortly before the Olympic Games in Beijing , Rezazadeh announced that he would not participate due to a lack of training. He also resigned from active weightlifting and was then head coach of the Iranian national weightlifting team for some time.
