Ardabil ( Persian اردبيل/ ærdæˈbiːl ; Azerbaijani اردبيل Ərdəbil / [ erdɛˈbɪl ]) is one of the largest and most important cities in historical Azerbaijan. It is located in the northwest of Iran in the province of the same name .

The city of Ardabil is known for its traditional silk and carpet production . Irrigation farming is also carried out in the area.

geography

Ardabil is located on a plateau at an altitude of 1351 meters and is surrounded by mountains. The most famous mountain is the Sabalan , also called Kūh-e Sabalān, west of the city. The city lies on the Baleq-Su river , which was named Nehr Ardabil in the Islamic Middle Ages. The river rises south of the Sabalan and flows into the Macaws . Because of the dry climate, artificial irrigation is necessary for agriculture. There are thermal springs near the city.

history

Ardabil is a very old settlement - the name is on Avestan Artavil returned "Sacred Place". Due to its location on important trade routes, Ardabil has been important since the Middle Ages. However, due to its proximity to the Caucasus, Ardabil was often the target of attacks by peoples from the Caucasus and southern Russia.

Since the time of the spread of Islam in Iran (approx. 633–652), Ardabil was the largest city in the northwest of the country. It was probably the capital of the province of Āzarbāydschān . The city was not hit hard until the Mongol invasion in the 13th century. Ardabil was able to repel two attacks, the third time the city fell into the hands of the Mongols. These caused a great massacre and not only killed the city population, but also the residents of the surrounding villages. Incursions by Mongols and Georgians prevented reconstruction for almost three centuries.

Only with the Safavid dynasty was the city able to recover. Ismail I , the founder of the Safavid dynasty, began his push towards the nationalization and centralization of the Persian government from Ardabil. Ismail I appointed Tabriz as the capital of his emerging empire around 1500 , but Ardabil was able to rise again to an important city, both economically and politically.

Attractions

The city is home to the tomb of Sheikh Safi Al-Din Ardebili , who gave the Safavid dynasty its name. The Mirsa Aliakbar Modschtahed Mosque is centrally located ; The listed Friday Mosque of Ardabil is located in the Pir Schamso-d-Din district .

traffic

The city is the end point of the railway line Mianeh-Ardebil provided in Mianeh of the railway line Tehran Täbris branches. The new line will be around 175 km long, single-track and designed for a top speed of 160 km / h. The route under construction is expected to be completed in 2019.
