The Tehran – Tabriz railway connects the Iranian capital with the north-west of the country and the connections there to Turkey to the TCDD and to the Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan ( Azerbaijan ).

description

The line is single-track , 736 km long and was built in the standard gauge used as standard in Iran . The line was opened in five sections between 1940 and 1958.

expansion

Tabriz reception building

The two-track expansion of the line between Tehran and Mianeh is planned .

This will be continued with a new construction of the Mianeh - Tabriz section , also double-track, which began in 2000. Today the route circumnavigates the Kuh-e Sahand and the mountains surrounding it between the two cities in an arc that extends to the southwest . This detour is to be cut off with a new route in the area of the pass near Bostanabad . This new line will be 183 km long and have nine stations . The new line will shorten the railway connection between Tehran and Tabriz by 114 km and cut travel time by more than half (currently: 12 ½ hours, in the future: 6 hours).

On November 27, 2019, the southern section of the new line between Mianeh and Bostanabad was opened by President Hassan Rohani . The remaining 71 km between Bostanabad and Tabriz should go into operation in March 2020.
