The Sabalan ( Persian سبلانEven Savalan on Azerbaijani ) is a likely no longer active stratovolcano in Iran .
Location and surroundings
The Sabalan is located in the northwest of Iran, in the Ardabil province . To the south, the mountain is in the Sarab County in the East Azerbaijan Province . It is the third highest mountain (4811 m) and after the Damavand the second highest volcano in the country. The higher region is used as a winter sports area, the mountain itself is a popular destination for climbers and hikers. There is also a medicinal bath near the mountain.
geology
The andesite rock of the Sabalan is 1.4 to 5.6 million years old. The summit region has several high points, the highest of which is 4811 m in the northeast. A crater lake has formed at the summit, which, apart from occasional exceptions, is covered with ice all year round at the end of July and beginning of August. At an altitude of over 4,000 m, the cold climate is sufficient to maintain a total of seven glaciers, some of which are or merge into rock glaciers .
history
The last eruption of the volcano was less than 10,000 years ago and thus dates from the Holocene . The Urartian rock inscription of Nascht-e ban comes from the time of Argišti II.
