East Azerbaijan ( Persian آذربايجان شرقی Āzārbāyǧān-e Šarqī , Azerbaijani Şərqi Azərbaycan ) is one of the 31 provinces of Iran . The capital is Tabriz . East Azerbaijan is part of the Iranian Azerbaijan landscape .

3,909,652 people live in the province (2016 census). The province covers 45,650 square kilometers. The population density is 86 inhabitants per square kilometer.

geography

The province of East Azerbaijan is located in northwestern Iran between 36 ° 43 'to 39 ° 42' north latitude 45 ° 5 'to 48 ° 56' east longitude. The area is bounded to the north by the republics of Azerbaijan and Armenia , to the east by the Ardabil Province , to the south by the Zanjan Province and to the west by the West Azerbaijan Province .

This area forms the eastern part of the Azerbaijan Plateau, which is part of the Iranian Plateau. 71% of this land is occupied by mountains; the high-yield building land makes up 29% of the land.

The Iran-Armenia natural gas pipeline, which went into operation on March 19, 2007, also runs through the province .

population

A large part of the population speaks the Azerbaijani language as their mother tongue. As in all of Iran, Persian is the official national and educational language and is spoken at least as a second language by almost the entire provincial population. Kurds and Armenians are significant minorities. Bilingualism is widespread.

Administrative division

The province has seen a steady increase in the number of Schahrestans (administrative districts) in recent decades . Most recently, the 23rd district was created in 2010 with the separation of Khoda Afarin from Kaleybar.
