Sarāb (also Sarab or Serab , Persian سراب) is a small town in the district of the same name in northern Iran .
geography
It is located about 100 kilometers southwest of the border with Azerbaijan and about 75 kilometers southwest of the city of Ardabil at an altitude of about 1675 m in the province of East Azerbaijan .
history
From 1750 to 1813 the place was the center of the Sarāb Khanate . Sarāb, surrounded by fields from the local irrigation farming, is a famous center for carpet making. The name of the well-known and noble Serapi carpets, after which even an English colonial steamer named HMS Serapi was named, is derived from the name of the city.
