Marand ( Persian تربت حيدريه) is the capital of Marand Administrative District in East Azerbaijan Province . In 2016 the city had around 131,000 inhabitants. Moritz von Kotzebue and August von Haxthausen both described local legends that placed the grave of Noah's wife in Marand. Both authors claimed that the name of the city meant "the mother lies here" and referred to Noah's wife.

The Köppen-Geiger climate classification system classifies the climate as semi-arid (BSk). The average temperature is 11.4 degrees.

history

The history of the city goes back to pre-Islamic times. During the time of the Armenian Kingdom , Marand was called Bakurakert. Between 815 and 850 Marand was controlled by Mohammad ibn Ba'ith, who greatly spread Persian culture.

The population is mainly active in industry and trade and there is also a small food industry.
