Son of a Preacher Man is a song by Dusty Springfield released in November 1968 and a single from their fifth studio album, Dusty in Memphis , released in January 1969 . The song, written by John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins, made it into the charts worldwide and is considered one of Dusty Springfield's most famous pieces. 1995 Son of a Preacher Man was released again as a single.

Emergence

In 1967 the songwriter duo John Hurley and Ronnie Wilkins was commissioned by Jerry Wexler to write a song for Aretha Franklin during a stay in Muscle Shoals (Alabama) . Based on Franklin's father, the Baptist preacher CL Franklin , Son of a Preacher Man was created . In fact, Aretha Franklin recorded the song too. However, Wexler was of the opinion that the song would not fit Franklin's repertoire and then offered it to Dusty Springfield for her album Dusty in Memphis . The recording took place in September 1968 at American Studios in Memphis .

Even after Springfield's chart successes, Aretha Franklin's version initially remained unpublished. Instead, her older sister Erma Franklin sang the song for her 1969 album Soul Sister . Aretha Franklin's version of the song was only presented to the public on the 1970 album This Girl's in Love with You .

Response and chart placements

Son of a Preacher Man received mostly positive reviews from critics and has become a cult hit in the years since its release . The song was included in various leaderboards by several music magazines. Among other things, the New Musical Express voted the song at number 43 of the Greatest Singles of All Time . 2004 was on the list of the 500 greatest songs of all time of Rolling Stone ranked 242nd

Son of a Preacher Man reached high chart positions worldwide. The song achieved top ten placements in the United States (10th place on the Billboard charts), Australia (6th place), Switzerland (3rd place), Austria (10th place), the Netherlands (4th place) and in Great Britain (9th place). With a re-release as a single, Son of a Preacher Man was even able to place itself as number 1 in the Icelandic charts in 1995.

Cover versions and use in pop culture

In 1994, Son of a Preacher Man found prominent use in a scene in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction . The soundtrack for the film reached number 21 on the US album charts and has sold more than two million times. The song was also used in the film Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and in an episode of the US television series Das Büro . In the video game Mafia III , Son of a Preacher Man can be heard on one of the radio stations.

The song Hits from the Bong by the rap group Cypress Hill from the album Black Sunday , released in 1993, contains samples of Son of a Preacher Man , which can be heard clearly, especially at the beginning of the song.

Since its release, Son of a Preacher Man has been covered several times. Among other things, the German musician Sarah Connor released a version of the song in 2007.
