Erma Franklin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erma Vernice Franklin (born March 13, 1938 in Shelby , Mississippi , † September 7, 2002 in Detroit , Michigan ) was an American soul , R&B and pop singer . However, her work has always been overshadowed by the career of her younger sister Aretha .

biography

Erma Franklin was born in the US state Mississippi; her father, CL Franklin, was an influential Baptist preacher and civil rights activist . The family moved several times before settling in Detroit. There Erma sang in the church choir with her sisters Aretha and Carolyn. In 1962 she released her first album, Her Name Is Erma . Her most famous recording is the original 1967 version of (Take a Little) Piece of My Heart (by Bert Berns and Jerry Ragovoy ), which was a top 10 hit on the American R&B charts. For this recording, Franklin was nominated for the Grammy Best R&B Singer for the only time in her career . However, the award went to her sister Aretha. Over the decades, Piece of My Heart became a classic, especially in the cover version of Big Brother & the Holding Company , front woman Janis Joplin . Country singer Faith Hill's version made it to number one on the country charts in 1994.

With Gotta Find Me a Lover (24 Hours a Day) from the album Soul Sister , Erma Franklin reached a top 40 position in the US R&B charts in 1969. This was her last hit. In the 1970s she withdrew from the music business - except for a few appearances with Aretha.

In 1992 Franklin made a surprising, if short, comeback: Piece of My Heart was used in a Levi’s advertisement in the UK . The song was then re-released as a single and reached the top 10 on the UK charts .

Erma Franklin died in 2002 of complications from cancer .
