Cherry Red Records is a British record label that was founded in 1978 and played an important role in British independent music in its early years . The name "Cherry Red" comes from the song of the same name by the band The Groundhogs .

history

Cherry Red was founded by Iain McNay and Richard Jones during the punk era to give smaller previously overlooked groups a chance. The first release was in June 1978 the single Bad Hearts by the group The Tights . The breakthrough for the label and the biggest commercial success was the debut album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables Californian band Dead Kennedys from 1980. Founder Iain McNay influenced the independent music also by writing to the emergence of a major UK indie charts was involved , which were first collected in 1980. In the first few years, the groups The Monochrome Set , Everything But The Girl and Felt were signed. Since the late 1980s, Cherry Red Records has been increasingly active in re-releasing records from other labels from a wide variety of musical styles that are no longer available. However, new studio material from established artists such as The Fall , Suzi Quatro and Marc Almond continued to be released.

In August 2014 Cherry Red Records announced new albums from Sarah Cracknell , Todd Rundgren , Claudia Brücken and Bettye LaVette . In early 2015, Kylie Minogue's first four studio albums were re-released in deluxe editions.
