Sarah Cracknell (born April 12, 1967 in Chelmsford , Essex , England ) is a British singer and songwriter and the lead singer of the indie pop group Saint Etienne .

Career

The beginnings

Sarah Cracknell grew up in Windsor , near London. Before her career with Saint Etienne, she released her first solo single Love Is All You need in 1987 , but it was unsuccessful. Together with Mick Bund she founded the band Prime Time and sang on the single Fingertips of the dancefloor formation Lovecut DB, which was released in 1991.

Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, who had just formed the group Saint Etienne, noticed her and had her sing on their third single Nothing can stop us now that same year . The group was originally planned with changing singers, but the collaboration with Sarah Cracknell worked so well that she has been the singer of Saint Etienne ever since. She shaped the distinctive sweet and at the same time disturbing sound of the band with her voice.

Solo career

After several albums with Saint Etienne, Sarah Cracknell released the solo single Anymore in 1996 , which was followed a year later by the debut album Lipslide . She was involved in writing and producing all of the tracks on the album. For the album she mainly worked with Johnny Male and Guy Batson. The song Coastal Town was originally the B-side of your first single from 1987. The album is dance-pop-style and received good reviews, but it was not a commercial success. In the USA, the debut album was released three years later, both versions differ significantly both in the cover artwork and the track list: five songs of the UK version were replaced by new titles, later the original tracks came on the US market as EP Kelly's Locker .

In December 2014, Sarah Cracknell recorded the new solo album Red Kite with Carwyn Ellis and Seb Lewsley , which was released on Cherry Red Records in June 2015 . It's more folk-oriented with mostly acoustic instrumentation. The duet Nothing left to talk about with Nicky Wire was released as a single by the Manic Street Preachers .

other projects

In addition to the band and solo career, Sarah Cracknell is active in numerous other projects, including with Etienne Daho , David Holmes , Paul van Dyk , Marc Almond ( I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten , originally by Dusty Springfield ) and with Mark Brown ( The Journey Continues , June 2008).

Sarah Cracknell is the daughter of Derek Cracknell, who worked as Stanley Kubrick's first assistant director . Since 2004 she has been married to Martin Kelly, the director of Heavenly Records . They have two children, Spencer (born 2001) and Sam (born 2004).
