His music can be assigned to trance , but he himself prefers the generic term " electronic dance music ".

First years of life until 1991

Paul van Dyk grew up in East Berlin in the district of Lichtenberg , where his mother moved early. Matthias Paul already turned to modern music at school. After graduating from high school, he completed an apprenticeship as a communications engineer and carpenter in the GDR . In October 1989 he and his mother left for Hamburg .

Disc jockey career

After the fall of the Berlin Wall , he quickly returned to Berlin and began working as a DJ in March 1991 , including at the events of the Dubmission series founded by André Hoche and Jürgen Cramer in the Berlin club Turbine in the Kreuzberg district and in the newly founded Berlin techno club Tresor . From now on he performed under the stage name Paul van Dyk . At the same time, recorded in his apartment, he created his first DJ mix for radio, namely for Zündfunk in Bayerischer Rundfunk. In 1992 he recorded his first record Perfect Day with the music producer Cosmic Baby as The Visions of Shiva , which was released on Mark Reeder's Berlin trance label MFS . He released his first album 45 RPM in 1994 on MFS. From that time on he played regularly in the Berlin club E-Werk until it closed in 1997.

In 1998 the single For an Angel from the reissue of his first album 45 RPM made the international breakthrough. The title was number 1 on the English dance charts for two weeks and number 1 on the German dance charts for four weeks. There were also placements in the US, Australian, Dutch, Belgian and Scandinavian charts. In the following year, van Dyk founded the music label Vandit Records , on which both his own productions and those of other artists are published.

At the end of 2005 van Dyk founded the online portal vonyc.com , consisting of an internet radio on which his favorite tracks, as well as entire live sets or radio broadcasts from international DJs, are broadcast, as well as a download portal through which music from various record labels can be legally downloaded for a fee. However, operations were discontinued on March 1, 2009.

On October 3rd, 2005 van Dyk played at the ceremony for the Day of German Unity in the Caligarihalle in the Babelsberg Film Park in Potsdam with Peter Heppner Wir sind wir . Van Dyk played the keyboard, Heppner sang and the music was played live by the Babelsberg German Film Orchestra .

Further worldwide appearances

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 2009, van Dyk composed the song We are one for the celebrations in front of the Brandenburg Gate . At the event, he played keyboard while Johnny McDaid sang.

In 2012 Van Dyk was the “ambassador” for the Berlin Brandenburg Airport, which was not opened after all . In this context he was seen on posters at bus stops and on large posters on house walls. About his engagement, he said in an interview with the Berlin BZ : I'm not just a testimonial , there is a lively musical collaboration behind all of this. For the announcements at the airport, I made the “ringtone”, for example, and composed the music for the corporate film. I will also publish a chill-out album called “Destinations” which will then be sold at the new airport.

Stage accident and its consequences

As a DJ at the A State Of Trance Festival in February 2016 in Utrecht , van Dyk fell off the stage. In the six meter deep fall, he suffered a double fracture of the spine and a traumatic brain injury . A faulty stage construction is considered to be the cause of the fall.

After the hospital stay, van Dyk published a message in which he thanked those around him and fans for their support and announced that he wanted to perform again from June 2016. However, he had to spend some time in a wheelchair and learn to walk again due to neurological disorders. He also found it difficult to articulate and had to learn to speak again. He processed his way back to the stage in his book To Stay In Life , which he presented in March 2019.

The organizer Alda Events finally paid the DJ eleven million euros in damages for the fall on the stage in 2018. On March 11, 2017, Paul van Dyk and his Colombian girlfriend Margarita Morello married in Cartagena . You now live in Berlin-Friedrichshain .
