Everything but the Girl was a British pop duo consisting of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt, which was founded in Kingston upon Hull in 1982 . They had their biggest international hit in the mid-1990s with the single Missing .

history

After Ben Watt (born December 6, 1962 in London , England) contacted Tracey Thorn (born September 26, 1962 in Brookmans Park, England) in 1982 through an advertisement on the notice board at the University of Hull , they founded the company Duo Everything but the Girl. The two became a couple both professionally and personally. They took the band name from the advertising slogan "We'll sell you everything for the bedroom - except for one woman!" From a local furniture store.

In January 1983 the duo made their first appearance at the London Institute for Contemporary Music .

Their first hit single was Each and Every One in the spring of 1984 . For many years the duo was an insider tip. From 1992 to 1993 Everything but the Girl had to take a break because Ben Watt was seriously ill with Churg-Strauss syndrome .

In mid-1994 they released their album Amplified Heart . With the Todd Terry remix of the single Missing , which originally only reached number 68 in the British charts, they achieved worldwide attention in autumn 1995. The following singles Wrong and Walking Wounded were also successes. In the years that followed Everything but the Girl released various studio and remix albums.

In spring 2005, they released their last album, Adapt or Die - 10 Years of Remix , after which the band withdrew.

Trivia

In the last episode of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother , the song Downtown Train is used to provide musical accompaniment to the first conversation between the main character Ted Mosby, played by Josh Radnor, and the mother. In contrast to the plot of the episode, this scene is rated very positively by most fans and critics, also because of the music.
