Tracey Anne Thorn (born September 26, 1962 in Brookmans Park , England ) is a British singer and songwriter . She became best known as the singer of the duo Everything but the Girl , along with her boyfriend and later husband Ben Watt. She grew up in Hatfield ( Hertfordshire , England) and studied English at Hull University .

Tracey Thorn began her career in the group "Marine Girls", which she founded in 1980 with her schoolmate Gina Hartman and which broke up in 1983. In 1982 she released a solo mini-album, A Distant Shore , which was released in 1985 by the Animalized label in Germany. She worked several times with Massive Attack : first for the tracks Protection and Better Things from the album Protection , then among other things for the soundtrack The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game for the film Batman Forever .

She also sang for The Style Council , The Go-Betweens , Working Week , and Lloyd Cole . The song Damage for Tiefschwarz was their first recording since 2002 in 2005.

In March 2007 her second solo album Out of the Woods was released by Virgin. After the first single It's All True , Raise the Roof followed in June, Grand Canyon in October and the fourth single was the cover version of the Pet Shop Boys title King's Cross in December 2007.

In 2010 she released her third solo album, Love And Its Opposite , this time with a clear return to her musical roots of the 1980s, i.e. more acoustic and less electronic music.

The Christmas album Tinsel and Lights followed in October 2012 , for which she recorded a number of Christmas songs by other authors in addition to two of her own compositions. On the album Gray Tickles, Black Pressure by John Grant (Bella Union, 2015) she sings the song Disappointing in a duet with Grant .
