Mafia III (also Mafia 3 ) is a computer game and the successor to Mafia II . It was developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K Games on October 7, 2016 for PlayStation 4 , Xbox One and Windows .

In contrast to its predecessor, the third part takes place in 1968 in Louisiana , United States . The focus of the action is the Dominican - Italian-born Lincoln Clay, who grew up in poor conditions and has been looking for a family all his life. But neither the orphanage, nor the church or the army can offer him a replacement. In 1968 he returned to New Bordeaux (a fictional version of New Orleans ) from the Vietnam War and found refuge with the Black Mob , a mafia-like organization led by his foster father, Sammy Robinson. However, Sammy wages a territorial war against a Haitian gang and is therefore indebted to Salvatore "Sal" Marcano, the Don of the powerful and influential Marcano family who set the tone in the city. At a meeting, Sal Lincoln says that he no longer believes Sammy will be able to run the black mob. So he suggests that Lincoln take his place; Lincoln declines the offer out of respect and gratitude to Sammy.
To pay off the debt, Lincoln soon worked with Sal's son Giorgi to rob the Louisiana Federal Reserve . After the successful coup, however, Sal turns against the black mob and has Sammy, his son and many of Lincoln's friends murdered. Lincoln himself is shot in the head by Giorgi and believed dead. James Ballard, a Catholic priest and close friend of Lincoln, saves him and nurses him back to health. When he has recovered somewhat, Lincoln contacts the CIA agent John Donovan, whom he knows from Vietnam. Donovan is willing to use his knowledge and resources to spy on the Marcanos, while Lincoln vows to destroy the Mafia family and take control of New Bordeaux himself.
Next, Lincoln begins looking for allies for his war against the Marcanos and eventually enlists the help of three lieutenants: Thomas Burke, the leader of the Irish mob whose son Danny helped in the Federal Reserve heist and was killed in Marcano's betrayal ; Cassandra, the head of the Haitian gang (whose previous leader, ironically, died at Lincoln himself), and finally Vito Scaletta, the main character from Mafia II, who came to New Bordeaux from Empire Bay after the events of the second game and worked for Sal Marcano but then he fell out. After Lincoln has freed the three lieutenants' respective boroughs from Marcano's control, he brings them all together and explains his plan: Together they will systematically shut down the Marcanos from below, as well as Sal's plan to withdraw from organized crime by building an expensive casino, ruin. Meanwhile, Lincoln's lieutenants will administer conquered boroughs and will also add money and profits to Lincoln's plan, slowly disrupting the Marcano family organization. At the same time, Lincoln has the opportunity to provide additional help to each of his lieutenants in order to strengthen their loyalty to him. Depending on Lincoln's decisions, one or more of the lieutenants could turn against him if he withheld too many boroughs from them, forcing Lincoln to kill them. The player should therefore make sure to distribute control over the city districts as fairly as possible.
After Lincoln had eliminated the most important lieutenants of the Marcanos together with Cassandra, Burke and Vito, he gradually murdered the members of the family and influential politicians that Sal was able to win over for his casino project. When Sal's criminal empire and his dream of the casino are finally devastated, Sal and Giorgi decide to barricade themselves on the construction site of the almost finished casino. Lincoln follows them and kills Giorgi before finally facing Sal Marcano himself. Defenseless Sal offers Lincoln a whiskey and tells him that he wanted to start the casino in hopes of escaping his criminal life and saving Giorgi an inevitable early death. After the conversation, Sal lets Lincoln kill him; if Lincoln decides against it, Sal kills himself, pointing out that he and Lincoln are not that different after all.
When Lincoln leaves the casino, he is confronted by old Leo Galante, deputy of the Italian Mafia Commission. Lincoln assures Leo that he was only at war with the Marcanos and that this war with Sal's death is now over. Leo is satisfied and lets Lincoln live. Lincoln is also allowed to retain control of New Bordeaux on condition that he surrenders 20% of his profits to the Mafia, just as Sal Marcano did before. Lincoln returns to Father James and Donovan and ultimately has to make his next decision: on Father James' advice, leave New Bordeaux and start over, on Donovan's advice, kill Cassandra, Burke and Vito and take sole power over the city, or manage the city together with the three lieutenants.
- If Lincoln decides to leave New Bordeaux, he will disappear from public life and only occasionally send Father James postcards from various places on earth. The lieutenant who was previously assigned most of the boroughs by Lincoln will then take control of the city.
- If Lincoln, along with his lieutenants, retains power over New Bordeaux, he will expand his criminal empire across the southern states and become a well-known philanthropist. However, Father James publicly despises him for what he has become.
- If Lincoln decides to take over New Bordeaux alone, he shoots his lieutenants, but is then killed by a car bomb installed by the remorseful Father James.
In a scene after the credits, John Donovan is confronted with a Senate committee to answer for his involvement in Lincoln Clay's takeover. Donovan explains that he helped Lincoln because he (Donovan) uncovered evidence that Sal Marcano was one of the conspirators responsible for the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy. Donovan also says he only agreed to meet the Senate because Senator Richard Blake, who chairs the hearing, is also implicated in Sal's files as one of the conspirators. Donovan then kills the Senator with a hidden pistol and announces that he will track down everyone else responsible for Kennedy's death.
development
The first rumors about the work on Mafia III were picked up by the specialist press in August 2012. In November, the studio 2K Czech reported that it was responsible for the previous Mafia title that it was working on a new, still secret project. In January 2014, however, 2K Czech was restructured and consequently dissolved. The studio's employees were moved to Brno and Novato . In December, the parent company 2K Games founded a new studio, Hangar 13. Haden Blackman, who was involved in the production of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed , was hired to head the studio . Hangar 13 then began work on an as yet unnamed project.
On July 28, 2015, 2K Games confirmed that Hangar 13 was working on Mafia III . A first trailer was shown on August 5th . Immediately after the initial release, 2K Games announced that there would be a PlayStation 4 Pro version of Mafia 3 . For the launch of the console, the improved version should be submitted via an update.
A few days after the initial release, the developers announced a first patch which, in addition to fixing bugs, will also integrate the ability to customize the protagonist Lincoln using various items of clothing.
In May 2020, the video game was re-released as Mafia III: Definitive Edition for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and the additional content that had previously been paid for was free.

reception
Preliminary reviews were positive and expressed the hope that Mafia III could build on the quality of its predecessors. The tests after it was released confirmed that the game was convincing “with clever storytelling, memorable characters and a really dense atmosphere”, but criticized the repetitive gameplay and the technically unfinished end product, especially in the PC version.
