Semnan ( Persian سمنان) is one of the 31 provinces in Iran. It has the city of the same name Semnan as its capital.

702,360 people live in the province (2016 census). The area of ​​the province extends to 97,491 square kilometers. The population density is 7 people per square kilometer.

geography

The sparsely populated province of Semnan is located in the northern part of Iran. It borders in the north on the provinces of Golestan , Mazandaran and North-Khorasan , in the west on the provinces Tehran and Qom , in the south on the province Esfahan , and in the east on the province Razavi-Khorasan .

In the center is the provincial capital Semnan with 126,780 inhabitants (2006 census). The largest city with 132,379 inhabitants (2006 census) is Schahrud . Semnan is partly very mountainous and includes parts of the great salt desert Dascht-e Kawir (also Kawir-e Namak).

history

Bistam (Bastam bei Shahrud) is the birthplace of Bāyazīd Bistāmī , the later Persian Islamic mystic of Sufism, in 803 . On November 13, 1948 , Hassan Rohani was born in Sorche , Semnan Province, the later Iranian politician and, since June 14, 2013, the seventh President of the Islamic Republic of Iran . On October 28, 1956 , Mahmud Ahmadinejad was born in Garmsar , Semnan Province, the later Iranian politician and from 2005 to 2013 the sixth President of the Islamic Republic of Iran .

Grain and cotton are grown in the province. The historically most important branches of industry are textile and carpet production, today automobile and bicycle production also play an important role. Semnan is located on the trade routes between the Iranian capital Tehran and the capital of the Razavi-Khorasan province , Mashhad . Semnan is connected to both cities by roads and rail lines.
