Isfahan , also Esfahan ( Persian استان اصفهان, DMG Ostān-e Eṣfahān [ ostɒːn e esfæˈhɒːn ]), is one of the 31 provinces in Iran . It is named after the capital of the same name .

5,120,850 people live in the province (2016 census). The province covers 107,029 square kilometers and has a population density of 48 people per square kilometer.

Isfahan is in the center of the country. It is bordered to the north by the provinces of Markazi , Qom and Semnan , to the south by the provinces of Fars , Kohgiluye and Boyer Ahmad , to the east by the province of Yazd and to the west by the provinces of Lurestan and Tschahār Mahāl and Bachtiyāri .
