Saint Stephanos Monastery
The Saint Stephanos Monastery ( Armenian Սուրբ Ստեփանոս վանք ) is an Armenian Apostolic monastery and is located in the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan , about 15 km northwest of the city of Jolfa .
The monastery was built in the 9th century in a deep gorge near the Aras River , which is now the border with Azerbaijan . During the Safavid dynasty, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times by earthquakes.
The monastery has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Armenian Monasteries in Iran since 2008, together with the St. Thaddäus Monastery and the Chapel of Dzordsor .
